Turning point
Honi chose not to ski in November, apart from a week-end on the dry slope in Edinburgh as part of the school team, which didn't really count, though a good time was had by all including poor Katy who broke her thumb on her first warm up run.
We didn't push it. It didn't seem to matter that much. Sam was busy finding his way in his transformation from skier to scholar and Honi was just busy. I was still mourning Xiong. When Honi opted out of December camp we went along with that too. What else to do? I had always felt strongly that a parent's role is simply that of facilitator - the drive has to come from the kid - but if the kid doesn't want to be facilitated?
We planned a low key Christmas trip to Flaine. I suggested Honi might train as she had the gear. She didn't object. She was still down to compete for the Children's team in Andorra in January and it made sense to get a bit of mileage in.
We stayed in the UK til 21 December. That was a first - even managed a couple of Christmas socials. I did the Christmas shopping, right down the cranberry sauce, and picked up fresh brussels and parsnips as we left, piling them on top of Sam's philosophy books.
Back in the comfort zone of Flaine Superski, Honi skied well. The training in Chile had made a difference. The snow bucketed down but, apart from a few warm up days and a family ski out of the valley, mainly in the woods, on Christmas Day, Honi resisted the powder and was true to her training schedule. By New Year's Eve she was resolved to race the Anglo Scottish in Les Houches in January. Her decision, we facilitated.
